My name is Jo Baker and I am a self taught, abstract artist and graphic designer based in the Barossa Valley. It was not until I started my graphic design course that I started experimenting with different mediums. I was immediately drawn to encaustic, hot wax painting as I loved the effects I could achieve and the detail in each painting. I launched an Instagram page just over a year ago under the name JB Designs so I could share my encaustic art.
As I experimented, interest was shown by people in the community so I started to display them at the local bakery and a retail shop. While trying to juggle work in the wine industry, two kids and trying to complete my graphic design course I decided to give the painting a rest while I completed my design course.
After discovering a love for alcohol inks I re launched my business under the name JB Design Co.
I rebranded so I could offer not just paintings but also graphic design services, in particular logo’s and branding. I think the reason I have been drawn to encaustic wax and alcohol inks is the fluidity and movement of the art. I like to paint freely with no fixed idea, as that is when I seem to come up with my favourite pieces.
